Talk to K-6 children
A talk was given at the “Colegio Highland” last May
19th. The speaker was Pedro "Peter" Garza, and he spoke to the children
about termometers and temperature, which was very useful for the
children to learn about "hot" and "cold". They learned about a mercury
column behaves in a glass termometer when it is placed in cold and hot
water. TRANE sponsored termometer keychains that were given to the
children at the end of the talk.

November 4th
CHAPTER ACTIVITY WITH STUDENT BRANCH INCLUDING MEETINGS, TECHNICAL
PROGRAMS AND TECHNICAL TOURS
Authorities of CONALEP (Technical School) were present with the
Governors
Meeting of November 4th. The main idea was to introduce its new
Dean,
Horacio Delgado. He attended with Pedro Buendia and Bernardo Gonzalez,
whom are in charge of outreach and training respectively. The Dean is
very
interested in knowing the previous arrangements and maintaining a good
relationship with ASHRAE, Monterrey Chapter. He thankful and explained
how useful are the scholarships that were given recently by the chapter
(see October 22th note below) to 14 students. Ricardo I. Arellano,
President
of the chapter let them know what the chapter expect from the
relationship
among CONALEP and ASHRAE and some ways for improving it. Some
background
of the working aspects with other deans was given in order to maintain
continuity over the work and achievements of the past. Donald Hay
(Treasurer
and Governor) talked about specific actions that reveal the essence of
the relationship. Juan Aguilar, Student Activities Chair, addressed an
issue that was already explained to the former dean of CONALEP about
the
new schemes for offering scholarships and what our expectations are
about
students that receive one of these grants. The idea is to involve
school
authorities, teachers and students more and more. We believe that it
was
very important to have CONALEP authorities in our meeting, because that
express by itself that they are committed to hold ASHRAE ideals within
their activities. They expressed that they recognize the importance of
the ASHRAE support to students through scholarships, equipment
donations
and very especially time dedicated to visits, courses and talks. We
offer
them to send (actually it was already sent at this moment) a guide of
the
scholarships policy that is currently under consideration by the
chapter
board. We are looking forward to have a stronger and renewed links with
this institution.

CHAPTER ACTIVITY WITH STUDENT BRANCH INCLUDING MEETINGS, TECHNICAL
PROGRAMS AND TECHNICAL TOURS
Meeting at ITESM for having the new Student Board 2004-2005 of the
ITESM Branch (see pictures)
It is very interesting the way for the operation of the student
associations
in this institution. Besides the ASHRAE officers, there are two more
members
in the board, one general chairperson and one chairperson for
activities
pro-México that ensure that link between the student association
and the institution. Authorities of ITESM were present, besides the
Faculty
Advisor of the ITESM Student Branch; Dr. José A. Manrique, and
the
Student Activities Chairman; Dr. Juan Antonio Aguilar Garib. The
meeting
took place at the "Centro Estudiantil" (Student Center) and the board
is
conformed by:
Ana Cecilia Garay Chaparro (President)
Omar Laguna Garrido (President Elect, Vice-President)
Héctor Carriedo Santa Cruz (Secretary)
Rodrigo Díaz (Treasurer)
Francisco Franco Alanís (General Chairman)
Yolima Flores Ibáñez (Chairwoman for Activities
pro-México)
The President addressed a message about the environmental issues trough
healthy competitions, which allows sharing of valuable information
among
the members. Among other activities, the new board is seeking to
promote
thermodynamic enjoying, promote young students participation trough
talks
given by professional members. Installation of a "Thermodynamic Day"
with
competitions and time sharing activities. She expressed her wish of
having
contact with the other student branches.. (see

CHAPTER ACTIVITY WITH STUDENT BRANCH INCLUDING MEETINGS, TECHNICAL
PROGRAMS AND TECHNICAL TOURS
Talk given by Esthela Tijerina at the Facultad de Arquitectura de la
UANL. The subject was Sustainable Construction before approximately 100
students and professors. One important issue is that we had the
presence
of the Dean of that school and the person in charge of the
student
affairs (Arq. Vázquez). At the end of the talk the Student
Activities
Chair, Monterrey Chapter addressed a message to the students inviting
them
to join ASHRAE within the UANL Student Branch. Success of this talk is
a result of the meeting that we had one day before with the Dean of the
Facultad de Arquitectura (see activity below).

October 14th
CHAPTER ACTIVITY WITH STUDENT BRANCH INCLUDING MEETINGS, TECHNICAL
PROGRAMS AND TECHNICAL TOURS
Meeting with the Board of ITESM and UANL Branches
Right after the Technical Session that is described below in the
student
night, we had a meeting..
Attendees:
Cecilia Garay (Incoming President ITESM Student Branch)
Cyndy Iñiguez (President Elect UANL Student Branch)
Enrique Flores (Secretary UANL Student Branch)
Alejandro Esquivel (Treasurer UANL Student Branch)
Ricardo I. Arellano (President Monterrey Chapter)
Juan Aguilar (Student Activities Chairman)
The idea was to discuss about the date for having the new ITESM
Student
Board. It is very important to be aware that these students are
supported
by its school, and that in order to have the its full support, they
observe
rules and procedures that are given for all the associations that exist
at ITESM. Cecilia and Ricardo exposed how the system is and talked
about
their experiences for having an strong student branch. Definitely, the
incoming board is already working, and we would have the formal
ceremony
shortly.
Other point that was discussed is what both branches are doing
regarding
the ASHRAE 2005 Student Design Project Competition. We were discussing
different schemes, but at the end the students will decide by
themselves
which is the best way for achieving their goals supported by their
Faculty
Advisors within each student branch.
We spoke a little, about inviting other students from institutions,
other than those that have a branch already. The agreement points were
that a date for the changing of student board at ITESM is imminent,
that
the incoming student board is working on following the school
procedures
in order to keep the branch strong, that both branches will discuss and
propose, separately within their own branch which would be the
strategy
for participating in project proposals and competitions (see
picture).
October 14th
STUDENT NIGHT AT CHAPTER MEETING
We had our Technical Session entitled "Heating: Engineering Basic
Concepts
and Equipment" given by Renzor Ray. This session was also declared as
"Student
Night". All the no member students that attended the meeting and joined
ASHRAE at the site paid the student member fee and got a pass for the
upcoming
November Technical Session. An especial invitation was addressed to the
student boards and faculty advisors to be there for endorsing student
activities.
Invitation to students was not limited to the schools with a student
branch.
The Student Activities Chairman gave a short talk inviting the student
to join ASHRAE and showed them what has been achieved in this few
months.
Part of the message was oriented to the role that the professional
members
have in showing the true value that being an ASHRAE member involves. 18
Students attended the session, 10 were members already and 1 joined at
the site. We had a serious conversation with Mr. Tirado, whom has good
contacts at Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) and would try to persude
these
person that in other times have exposed their intention for having a
student
branch (2 students of UDEM attended the session)..
Members of ITESM and UANL Student Branch were there. Right after the
technical session, these members, the Student Activities Chairman and
the
President of the Chapter stayed there for a small meeting (at least
that
was the idea, but we stayed longer, about an hour after everybody left)
regarding the new board at ITESM and the ASHRAE 2005 Student Design
Project
Competition. The chairman proposed several way of working, although
both,
the Student Activities Chairman and the President of the chapter
encouraged
the student to make their own decisions. There is no doubt, this
session
and meeting were highly productive (see
pictures)
October 1st
PAOE
With the activities that are shown below among other criteria given
by ASHRAE (see our PAOE page) we
reached
PAR and uploaded our information on the ASHRAE Web page already. We
have
here 50 points because we were the first ones (This was checked by
myself)
to have our PAOE points on the ASHRAE web site, and 25 more because we
achieved this goal before November 1st. (Point
reports can be seen here). Thank you very much to all of the
persons
that helped to accomplished this challenge. We will update these points
as soon the Region VIII Student Chair allows us to do it.

between
ASHRAE and UANL even stronger for achieving their missions and
accomplishing
their goals. This event was witnessed by high authorities of the UANL,
ASHRAE and about 80 persons among students and faculty (see

Right after this event, Hugh McMillan gave a conference (see

them what ASHRAE has meant for him, what ASHRAE is expecting from us,
how
ASHRAE could help us in our career development and the importance of

achievements,
such as a course related to steam generators, and the implementation of
